the problem

The Integrated Career Journey needed to evolve from a concept into a practical tool for career progression, addressing user engagement and managerial oversight issues.

the process
Developing the Integrated Career Journey

I started with a comprehensive analysis of user behaviors and a study of competitors in the e-learning domain, like LinkedIn Learning and Coursera. This helped in understanding the market standards and user expectations from modern learning platforms.

Based on the research, I identified three main user types – the ambitious 'Go-Getter', the content 'I’m Fine Where I Am', and the exploratory 'I’m Curious'. Each persona was crafted to address the challenge of declining user engagement in learning tracks.

User Persona for the Truly Contented
User Persona for the Go-Getter
User Persona for Undecided Explorer

I used these insights, to define the goals for the learning journey:

g.1

Enhance Skills and Career Development

The primary goal was to provide a platform for employees to upskill and learn new competencies, aligning with their career advancement goals or potential pivots in their professional paths.

g.2

Boost User Engagement and Learning Completion

Addressing the issue of diminishing engagement in online learning, the project aimed to increase user interaction and completion rates of learning tracks through personalized and engaging content.

g.3

Provide Insightful Data to Managers

Another key goal was to equip managers with actionable insights into their team members' learning progress, enabling them to offer better support and guidance in their career development journeys.

Conceptualizing and Prototyping

The Proof Of Concept phase involved creating a basic model of ICJ to present to internal teams. This step was pivotal in garnering initial support and excitement for the project.

Gamification Strategy

Post-feedback, I focused on integrating gamification elements like badge earning to make learning more engaging and rewarding. Here, I provide early concepts wireframes of the gamification elements

Refining the Learning Experience

I worked closely with the data science and engineering teams to ensure learning suggestions were personalized and matched user skill levels and interests. I also developed detailed learning screens outlining user selection of career journeys and interactions with the system.

Iterative Design Process

Based on testing feedback, I iteratively improved the ICJ, focusing on clarifying course recommendations, test interplay, and enhancing video learning experiences.

User-Centric Design Iterations

Two rounds of usability testing were conducted, focusing on the intuitiveness and functionality of the system. Feedback from these sessions was instrumental in refining the design.

Design Outcomes

Created a user-friendly platform with personalized learning journeys, gamification, and managerial oversight tools.

How It Works

Users select career goals, embark on learning journeys, and take skill assessments, with the flexibility to pause or switch paths.

Zero State for career journey. User is encouraged to add a role in order to begin their career journey
User selects drop down to search subfunctions, then they select a subfunction to select a card
Pop up message asking the user if they'd like more role recommendations
The user has chosen two additional roles to make a total of three roles shown in the career progression
Career Journey Landing page welcoming user. They have a role "learn & master angular" already selected and that is being displayed
User is seeing learning units that are currently in progress and which sections in the larger unit they've completed
User is seeing what a completed unit in the greater learning journey looks like. All of the learning sections are checked off.
The user is seeing the congratulations page and badge after they've completed their entire learning journey. They can opt to share their results with their manager, create a new journey or receive more training in their selected journey

Results and Feedback

The UX Researcher conducted user testing with participants who expressed overwhelming support for the feature.

Next Steps

Implementing features like social media sharing for badges/certificates, creating journey options for current roles, and integrating job application functionalities.

conclusion

The ICJ's transition from a POC to a full functional feature was a resounding success, largely due to its engaging design and user-focused approach. Feedback has shaped future enhancements ensuring ICJ remains a vital tool for career development within Korn Ferry.
